The Pahara Institute announced today the new March 2023 cohort of the highly selective Pahara Fellowship. The goal of the Pahara Fellowship is to strengthen and sustain values-driven leaders who are transforming public education so that every child is prepared to lead a free and fulfilling life.
LEAL – Latino Educators Advancing Leadership – is elated to announce that Myrialis King, Board Member and CEO of CANO, was named as one of these leaders.
In this one-year, cohort-based program, Myrialis is identified as an exceptional leader in the educational excellence and equity movement. Myrialis will eventually join Malka Borrego, Nella Garcia Urban, and Elsie Urueta Pollock other LEAL Board Members as alumni of this transformational fellowship.

More about Myrialis King
Myrialis King is the Founder and CEO of Community Academies of New Orleans (CANO), which was created to bring several New Orleans charter schools together under one organization. King graduated from Amherst College with a B.A. in Law, Jurisprudence and Social Thought, and a concentration in Latin American Politics, and earned her Juris Doctor from Howard University School of Law. King is an Institute of Mental Hygiene of New Orleans Board Member, a NEW ORLEANS CITY PARK IMPROVEMENT ASSOCIATION Board member and Treasurer, and a W.K. Kellogg Foundation Community Leadership Network Fellowship alum. Myrialis King joined the LEAL Board in August 2022 and contributes her time and talents to founding the organization.
Latina roots that ground her success
Originally from Puerto Rico and a native Spanish speaker, King began her career educating students while in college in the inner city of Holyoke, MA. A champion for English learners and their families and for those whose voices are often muted, King is grounded in the belief that all children, regardless of race, family income level, home language, or ability, not only deserve but need a solid educational foundation to create transformational, generational impact. She lives and leads by this belief every day.
Like so many other Latino leaders, her own experiences have shaped both her passion for English learners and their families. Additionally, she has built a deep, comprehensive Trauma Informed Wellness Program. She believes this hard, good work can only be accomplished in partnership with the community.
It is with this guiding principle that she leads Community Academies of New Orleans.

More about the Pahara Institute
The Pahara Fellowship supports leaders to facilitate their dynamic growth and strengthen their collective efforts to dramatically improve public education, especially those serving low-income children and communities. The Fellowship provides these leaders with the unusual opportunity to step back from their demanding daily work to reflect with peers on their collective and individual impact as leaders and change agents. Fellows challenge each other to think beyond traditional silos and sector boundaries to develop strategies that enhance their effectiveness as leaders, address leadership challenges in public education, and accelerate the improvements needed to provide high-quality learning opportunities for all of our nation’s children.
